The report details the size of the workforce and the cybersecurity skills gap in meeting the demand for cybersecurity expertise. It also looks at the talent and the skills that organisations need, the wider economic context and the views of the professionals themselves. Here are some of the key takeaways from the ISC2 Cybersecurity Workforce Study.

58% of respondents have stated that the skills gap puts their organizations at a significant risk.

• Budget is the biggest factor in the talent and skills gaps – the combination of economic pressure and global uncertainty are driving the reduction in workforce.
• The skills gap, as opposed to a staffing shortage is having more of an impact as teams struggle to find the expertise they need.
• The majority of respondents feel that this gap impacts their ability to secure their organisations.

AI adoption is accelerating with benefits and risks.

• AI is becoming an increasingly important tool for cybersecurity teams by helping bridge some of the existing skills gap. Although it’s uncertain how AI will evolve and automate tasks, most professionals believe their expertise will remain valuable alongside AI.
• Hiring managers are aware that AI will play a major role in the future. They also understand the importance of nontechnical skills, which will become increasingly valuable as AI becomes more widespread.
• As we implement AI and reap its benefits, caution is necessary. As data privacy and security issues associated with this technology become more evident, there is a growing need for robust policies and strategies.

Addressing the cybersecurity skills gap.

• Cybersecurity teams should look outside of IT and beyond traditional qualifications and consider a wider pool of talent. Finding the right individuals and investing in professional development and certifications can be very effective.
• For existing teams, the use of certifications can bolster internal expertise and improve retention of essential skills and experience.
• Non-technical skills are becoming more relevant and hiring managers anticipate the role that AI will play in the future. They are looking for individuals that display strong problem-solving, teamwork, collaboration, curiosity and communication.
